NEW YORK – In a world where speed and accuracy are of utmost importance, Business Insider has embraced artificial intelligence (AI) to support its editorial workflow. Throughout 2024, AI tools have played a more integrated role within the company’s day-to-day operations, streamlining everything from fact-checking to cross-departmental coordination among remote team members. This seamless AI integration has also led the company to report significant gains in efficiency and quality control, according to Associate Editor Emily Krivograd.
Krivograd, who has collaborated on Business Insider’s AI initiatives, said the impact has been both measurable and transformative. “With AI, we’re able to turn stories around faster without compromising quality,” she said. “Our content management system and grammar tool, Muse and Grammarly, ensure that articles go through several rounds of review without losing momentum.” According to Krivograd, recent improvements in these systems have reduced content processing times by nearly 30%, allowing journalists to heavily focus on in-depth reporting and analysis.
Other members within Business Insider’s newsroom have also embraced a blended approach, combining AI technology with human oversight. “AI is a valuable tool, but it doesn’t replace the human touch. We’re committed to preserving journalistic integrity by having human editors review all AI-generated suggestions,” Krivograd said. This objective process, established as part of Business Insider’s quality assurance protocol, ensures that AI recommendations are consistently vetted by experienced editors before publication.
Beyond editing and review, AI has also facilitated smoother remote work operations at the New York-based company. In a newsroom where team members work across multiple time zones, automated systems have become essential for coordinating information covered in meetings not all reporters and editors can attend. Krivograd, who is based in the Chicago area, said “Otter.ai is one of the most helpful tools to keep editorial staff up-to-date.”
“Remote work has always posed challenges in terms of keeping everyone on the same page,” Krivograd said. “However, Otter.ai saves time by transcribing meetings and recorded supplemental trainings, like updated fact-checking or alt text writing processes, when staff members may not have time to attend every single meeting.” This enhanced process has allowed journalists and editors with heavier workflows to reallocate their time toward high-level analysis and storytelling rather than spending time watching recorded Google Meets videos and taking notes themselves.
Despite these advancements, Krivograd acknowledges that transparency is a key concern for Business Insider. “We want readers to understand when and how AI plays a role in our content,” she noted. Plans are underway to incorporate disclaimers on articles that employ AI assistance, ensuring that readers are informed of any technological support used in the story’s production.
As Business Insider moves forward with its AI initiatives, the company remains focused on upholding journalistic ethics and fostering a trustworthy relationship with its audience. Krivograd expressed confidence in AI’s role in shaping the future of journalism, emphasizing that the integration of technology and human expertise could ultimately enhance the accuracy, reliability, and speed of news reporting.
