The Illinois Education and Technology Conference (IETC) 2024, held November 20 to 22 in Springfield, offered a hub of innovation, collaboration, and insight into the future of educational technology. Among the many educators, administrators, and tech specialists in attendance was Cameron Ashby, Technology Hardware Specialist for Manteno CUSD 5. The event emphasized artificial intelligence (AI) in education and the importance of nurturing relationships with key technology vendors.

A primary focus for Ashby was meeting with vendors like ITSavvy and Blocksi. ITSavvy demonstrated its continued commitment to innovative solutions and robust client support. Blocksi, known for its classroom management and content filtering tools, is a critical partner for managing Manteno’s Chromebook fleet. These interactions reinforced the importance of face-to-face communication in fostering strong partnerships. “It’s important to meet your vendors in person,” Ashby explained. “These conversations help build relationships and ensure their products evolve to meet our district’s needs.”

Ashby emphasized how vital these relationships are in supporting the district’s day-to-day operations and long-term goals. “The IETC was a phenomenal experience, from the workshops and networking to getting to meet the vendors you work with on the day-to-day,” Ashby said. “It’s an invaluable opportunity to discuss relationship growth and product improvements directly.

Beyond vendor meetings, the conference highlighted the growing role of AI in education. One standout presentation, titled “The Bionic Educator,” was introduced by Eric Curts, a well-known figure in educational technology. The presentation focused on how AI tools can enhance educators’ effectiveness without replacing their vital human touch. “The biggest takeaway from the conference this year was how much AI has been incorporated into education,” Ashby said.

The workshops, presentations, and networking opportunities at IETC left attendees inspired and equipped with actionable strategies to improve their schools. For Ashby, the connections formed and insights gained from the event will have a lasting impact on Manteno CUSD 5’s technology initiatives.
